For most living rooms, the right rug should connect the seating area rather than float in the middle of the room.

• Compact layouts: A 5' x 7' can work in smaller seating areas, especially when the rug is centered under the coffee table.
• Most common fit: A 6' x 9' or 8' x 10' is usually the safest choice when you want at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug.
• Large rooms and sectionals: Choose 8' x 10' or 9' x 12' when you want the seating area to feel fully grounded and visually connected.
• Simple rule: If you are deciding between two sizes, the larger rug usually creates a more finished living room.

Bedroom rugs should give you soft landing space on both sides of the bed without crowding the room.

• Twin and smaller layouts: A 4' x 6' or 5' x 7' works well at the side or foot of the bed when you want coverage without taking over the room.
• Full or queen beds: A 6' x 9' is often the best middle ground, especially when placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed.
• Queen to king beds: An 8' x 10' gives more generous side coverage, while a 9' x 12' works best in larger primary bedrooms.
• Placement rule: Start the rug about one-third down from the headboard so the bed stays anchored and the nightstands can remain off the rug if needed.

Dining room rugs need enough extra space for chairs to stay on the rug when pulled back from the table.

• The 24-inch rule: Leave at least 24 inches of rug beyond the table on all sides so chairs can move more easily.
• Smaller dining setups: A 6' x 9' can work for compact tables and breakfast areas when chair clearance is limited but still comfortable.
• Most rectangular tables: An 8' x 10' is usually the safest fit for everyday 6 to 8 seat layouts.
• Larger dining rooms: Choose 9' x 12' when you need extra chair clearance or want the rug to feel more proportionate under a longer table.
